The Supreme Court yesterday ordered the medical examination of Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan on May 4 by a board of doctors, to be set up by a government hospital in Kolkata.
The apex court directed the director-general of West Bengal Police to constitute a special team to get Justice Karnan's medical examination done.
Dismissing the SC order wherein his verdicts since February 8 need not be obeyed, Justice Karnan said, "If I pass order against X and Y, they themselves can not set aside my order". The court put the suo motu contempt proceedings initiated against Justice Karnan for consideration on May 9. "The seven judges looking at my case are corrupt", he told reporters.
The SC bench also noted that the "present conduct of the Justice Karnan was extremely contemptuous". On 13 February, justice Karnan, in a written reply to the apex court, made allegations of caste bias against him by the seniormost judges of the apex court.
Earlier, Justices Karnan had appeared before the apex court and sought restoration of his judicial and administrative powers.
But that was the only lighter moment in otherwise serious proceedings during which the SC came to the conclusion that "the orders passed by him are ex-facie and clearly contemptuous" and indicated that he may face an additional contempt of court case in future.More news: Fox Pushes Back On Report That Hannity Seeking Exit After Shine's Resignation

In its order, the bench directed that no court or tribunal in the country should take cognizance of the orders passed by Justice Karnan after February 8, when the contempt proceedings were started against him.
The order comes after Justice Karnan ordered the Air Control Authority of India to debar SC judges from travelling overseas and "spread the virus of caste discrimination".
The move comes after Justice Karnan defied the Supreme Court once again by not appearing before it on Monday.
"The said order is a ridiculous order without proper application of mind in following appropriate procedures as required...the seven accused judges have desperately adopted this ridiculous order, in order to escape the punishment leviable via the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (prevention of) atrocity act", Karnan said.
Instead, he ordered the Delhi Police to produce the seven apex court judges before a psychiatric medical board under the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi and submit a report on or before 7 May after conducting "appropriate medical tests". Why are seven judges taking a special interest in me?
What prompted the court to take this unprecedented step was the receipt of an order passed by Justice Karnan directing all seven judges of Supreme Court hearing his case besides another judge to appear in contempt before him.
