For years, the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario has called for greater and more sustainable investment in psychotherapy and other support services in response to what many believe is a mental health crisis on campuses across Ontario.
Currently, $9 million per year goes to mental health services and supports for postsecondary students.
"The stories submitted to our review made it clear that essential mental health services need an urgent increase in funding along with a review of where those funds are spent", says People's Mental Health Report author Marianne Elliott, "and we are pleased that the Government has responded by acknowledging the problem".
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, approximately one in five children ages 13-18 in the US experience a severe mental disorder in a given year, and mood disorders are the third leading cause of hospitalizations for Americans aged 18-44. "With the knowledge we have, we feel we have the potential to change that trajectory for the children suffering from mental health issues", she said. Engaging people in conversations about mental illness is important at every stage of recovery. Most likely someone you know struggles or has a family member who struggles with and/or treats the symptoms of a mental health disorder. We are better able to cope with challenges and negative experiences.
