As seen in the video below, Sega has put together some footage depicting hand-drawn animations of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in action that is interspersed between several segments of gameplay from the upcoming title.

"Experience the ultimate celebration of past and future in Sonic Mania, an all-new 2D Sonic adventure running at a crisp 60FPS with stunning HD retro-style graphics", says Sega (via Gematsu). You can re-live the Sonic of the past with an exciting new twist on classic zones while fighting against new bosses and Dr. Eggman's evil robot army. Sonic the hedgehog, Tails the fox and Knuckles the echidna will all appear in the game. Sega has assembled a "supergroup" of developers for Sonic's most recent foray into the second dimension including Christian "Taxman" Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games.
