The Egyptian embassy in Washington is following updates in the investigation of the kidnapping and alleged killing of an Egyptian-American Muslim girl, Nabra Hassanen, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ahmed Abou Zeid said Tuesday in an official statement.
At the same time, he said there are people in the Muslim community who are less concerned with the legalities of what constitutes a hate crime and have a more visceral reaction.
He said the slain teenager was "so loved by so many people". Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, of Sterling, is charged with her murder.
Authorities said its findings could change pending an ongoing investigation. Fairfax County's prosecutor said they are investigating to see whether they will charge Torres with anything else.
Torres, 22, put the injured teen in his auto, officials said. And now, he says it feels like that rite of passage has come under attack. The woman said that's because of scrutiny of the case. For months, Hicks, a resident of the same complex they lived in, had harassed Barakat about the designated parking spaces-each tenant was given one. He said he sought to comfort the victim's mother by telling her that a person who dies is such a manner "will enter paradise, with not any question asked".
The memorial erected for Nabra Hassanen, the 17-year-old Muslim girl who was murdered earlier this week, was set on fire Wednesday morning.
Parker said there was no indication the attack near the All Dulles Area Muslim Society mosque early on Sunday was motivated by race or religion.More news: Former UFC Fighter Tim Hague Reportedly Brain Dead After Boxing Match

Police said an altercation began between Martinez Torres and a teenage boy in the group who was riding a bicycle. Martinez Torres caught up to her and assaulted her with a metal baseball bat, then abducted her in his auto.
Hassanen, a sophomore at South Lakes High School, was reported missing on Sunday, June 18, around 4 a.m. near Dranesville Road and Woodson Road in Herndon, which is in Fairfax County.
Torres struck Nabra with the bat and then abducted the 17-year-old, taking her into his auto to another location, where he assaulted her again, authorities say. Retzer says she offered condolences and says Nabra will be greatly missed.
Didn't Torres take Nabra and put her in his auto? The incident is not being investigated as a hate crime.
The Council on American-Islamic Affairs has urged police to "conduct a thorough investigation of possible bias motive in [Hassanen's] case, coming as it does at a time of rising Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate attacks nationwide". It said the society was enlisting licensed counselors to assist anyone in need.
According to police, the teen was walking back with friends from the Sterling mosque Sunday around 3:40 a.m. when a man confronted then tried to run them over. Martinez chased the youths into a parking lot, emerged from his vehicle with a baseball bat, and struck Hassanen, she said.
Viriginia police have ruled her death was an act of road rage and not a hate crime.
The vigil will be held at 1609 Washington Plaza, Reston, Virginia 20190.
Martinez Torres was arraigned Monday and denied bail pending a July 19 court appearance.
