The officers agreed to Thompson's request, watching (and filming) as he got down on one knee.
Cops in Muskogee, Oklahoma, say they arrested 35-year-old Brandon Thompson July 4 on six felony warrants and were leading him to a waiting police auto when he made an unusual request.
An Oklahoma man intent on proposing to his girlfriend didn't let getting arrested derail his plans. The video caught with police body camera shows the touching moment.
Before officers arrived, the family was in the front yard celebrating Thompson's birthday and Independence Day - which fall on the same day.
According to NBC New York, Thompson's arrest is related to charges including possession of a firearm after a felony conviction, possession of a controlled unsafe substance and failure to appear in court.
"It took us by surprise that he asked if he could do it", said Officer Lincoln Anderson. "I didn't want to part ways with her not showing exactly how I feel for her", Thompson told CNN by phone.More news: Centre girds up for safe Amarnath Yatra as ultras plan Burhan anniversary

Leandria Keith, his lady love, said yes.
"I asked the officer if I could propose", said Thompson in a phone interview with CNN.
Anderson said he hopes Thompson learns a valuable lesson through the arrest and proposal.
The officers moved Thompson's handcuffs so he could place the engagement ring on his fiancee's finger, and she said yes. "I know that he loves me and I love him and we can get through anything together", Keith said. Keith pulled the couple's savings together to bail Thompson out of jail. The couple says they will set a date once Thompson's legal problems are resolved. He was released the day after his arrest.
He is scheduled to appear in court on July 17.
